History of the Kliphotel
This old hotel was built in 1931 by a Mr Smith with the money that he won in the Rhodesian Sweepstakes. At that stage it made a lot of sense as this was right next to the main road between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
The original establishment consisted of 22 small rooms each with a basin and cupboard with communal toilets and bathrooms.
A few years later the Garden Route was upgraded and the N2 became the main road between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. This diversion of regular traffic spelt the end of an era for the old hotel. After many years of desolation and deteriorating, it was restored by Anton Gerber and has been in use since 2012.
The Kliphotel Country Store now stands proudly alongside the famous R62, and is a favourite amongst Langkloof locals.
